Non-political Politics

I’ve avoided writing about politics here. Primarily, the reason is simply that, being Canadian, the U.S political system confuses me.  I’m not saying Canada’s system is better, just very different. Notably, we have 3 main political parties as opposed to two.  All that really means is that, come election time, there are even more commercials, lawn signs etc.

This still isn’t really about politics as much as it is about a couple of casual observations. I pretty much hate all the political commercials. Most of them are attacks against opponents and have no real substance. That being said, sometimes someone does say something worth noting.

Agree with Obama or not, he hit the nail on the head with at least one commercial regarding education. Government can’t and shouldn’t assume all the responsibilty for the education of our kids. Obama states that it is time for parents to shut off the TV, read to kids and instill in them a thirst for learning.

I would actually take it a step further. It’s maybe time to stop or limit time with video games and encourage kids to get outside and play. Get some physical activity and use their imiginations. Maybe it’s time for parents to put down the TV remote and try playing a game with their kids. Maybe it’s time to start eating at a dinner table as a family instead of in front of the tube.

On another subject, Sarah Palin made a statement during an interview with James Dobson. She states she is not worried about the election and that on November 4th, the right outcome will happen and God will prevail. I tend to agree with her statement, maybe just not her meaning behind it. I have no doubt that she was meaning that the Republicans would win. Maybe they will and then maybe they won’t. I believe that, regardless of who wins, it is all within God’s plan. I can’t agree that God is Republican. Moreover, I can’t believe an election is something that can thwart God. So, after all is said and done, I am sure that on Novemebr 5th, regardless of who wins, the sun will still rise in the East as God designed.

In the end, whether it be a Democrat or Republican victory, I think these two messages are ones which people need to take to heart. First, God is God and He is in control. He has the situation covered. Secondly, parents need to reconnect with their kids. Parenting is more than paying their kids way through school or dropping them off at soccer practice. Instead of buying a TV for their room, get them a membership at the Y, and consider joining them.

Later.

  1. You’ll have to pry the remote from my cold, stiff, very dead fingers!

The system is just plain atrocious. It gives incentive to candidates to campaign negatively. It encourages votes based on appearance and false hope instead of quality and vision. It’s who can “act” presidential rather than who can “be” presidential.

There’s so much ‘noise’ in the election process that those of us who really want to hear the ‘signal’ are in a world of hurt….
